Carl
~9 years old (but who really knows?)
Pitbull Mix
Neutered, Fully Vetted
Carl’s story is one of mystery, comedy, and mild confusion. He came into the shelter as a stray and sat there for about a month before joining rescue life, where he’s been winning hearts ever since. No one knows his past…not his age, not his backstory, not even what kind of mischief he got into before finding safety. The shelter guessed 9, but he’s got moments that make you think he’s younger… or maybe just timeless. Whether Carl has 5 years or 10 years ahead of him, we’re betting on 20…because that’s just the kind of “beat the odds” dog he is.
Personality: Carl is a walking contradiction. His face always looks like he just read the world’s saddest novel, but in reality, he’s pure happiness wrapped in fur (and maybe a faint odor). He’s somehow everywhere and nowhere all at once… quiet, calm, but impossible to miss. His joy is contagious, his charm unexplainable, and his love for snacks unmatched. Don’t be fooled by his tragic expression!!! this man is living his best life.
He also might be partially deaf. Or he might just be stubborn. Or a little bit of both. It’s hard to say… and honestly, that’s peak Carl. Sometimes you call his name and he stares into space like he’s hearing the secrets of the universe. Other times, you whisper “treat” from across the room and he’s suddenly right there.
Dogs: Carl is excellent with other dogs. He’s polite, friendly, and content to coexist, cuddle, or hang out quietly. He’s a pro at picking up on other dogs’ social cues…if someone isn’t into him, he gives them space…. But he will happily and excitedly greet them initially, not always realizing they may not want to say hi. But if you’ve got a social pup who enjoys companionship, Carl would love to be their mellow sidekick.
Cats: Carl is currently living with three cats of different temperaments. He’s learning that they are friends, not snacks. He does best with very slow introductions and supervision… because sometimes he gets a little too excited and forgets his manners. If redirected early, he’ll leave them alone and coexist peacefully. A cat-free home would be easiest, but if you’re an experienced, savvy dog-and-cat household, he could absolutely make it work.
Kids/Humans: Carl loves everyone. Men, women, kids, strangers… if you have hands, he would like them to pet him. If you have treats, he considers you a lifelong friend. He’s affectionate, loyal, and hilariously expressive. He’s happiest being part of whatever you’re doing… whether that’s walking, lounging, or staring pensively into the void.
Kennel/Potty/Lifestyle: Carl is low-energy and laid-back. He enjoys short bursts of play (tug or fetch for a few minutes) but mostly prefers naps, cuddles, and snacks. He’s doing great in his kennel and is mostly potty trained… he just needs a good routine and structure to stay on track. He drinks a lot of water and can be a bit oblivious, so belly bands and crating when unsupervised have been helping a lot.
He’s steadily gaining weight, getting healthier, and yes… smelling slightly less stinky. He may always have a little “Eau de Carl,” but honestly? It’s part of his legend.
Why Carl?
Because there’s never been another quite like him. He’s perfectly imperfect… STINKY but sweet, sad-looking but happy, possibly deaf but deeply in tune with love. Carl isn’t just a dog; he’s a reminder to find joy in contradictions, humor in imperfection, and comfort in companionship.
Carl has waited long enough for a forever home. Now, he’s ready to spend his mysterious (and probably long) life doing what he does best… loving hard, napping harder, and making you laugh daily. He doesn’t need much… just love, structure, and a family who appreciates a dog who farts like a truck stop but loves like a poet.
